Why the Wright story matters so much.

Read Glen Greenwald’s take on this. So true. What offended me most about this whole thing is that a smart person like Obama goes to church in the first place. If you attend church you better check and leave your critical thinking skills at the front entrance, because these will only get in the way once you enter the building.

What’s up with the lip service to religion that everybody apparently has to pay in this country? When will we get to see a rational, non-superstitious (i.e., non-religious)...Continue Reading »

Is Voting a duty or a privilege or…both?

Here’s a short rant about a topic that’s bothered me for a long time: The dismal voter turnout in the U.S. I have a hunch that disasters like the current U.S. administration (Bush) could be avoided if voting was compulsory instead of voluntary. You may laugh, but compulsory voting is strictly enforced in Australia, for example. In the U.S. about 50% of those old enough to vote actually do so. Only about 70% of eligible voters even register to vote, which certainly contributes to the de-facto voter apathy. The U.S has a long history of making voting hard and difficult for the general...Continue Reading »

WTF is Sen. Clinton still doing in this race?

Tomorrow is the day of the Pennsylvania Democratic primary. The news media has been keeping this non-event alive and well out of self interest for the past couple of weeks even though there is no way that Sen. Clinton can accomplish anything by winning a majority of the popular vote in this large state. My guess is that she’ll will the popular vote in PA by 4-6% but that does not mean much in the all-important delegate race. Here she is trailing Sen. Obama by about 10% at the moment with no chance of making up the difference with the remaining couple of primary states, most of which will...Continue Reading »

Afghanistan

The situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating. The U.S. leadership (big word for a bunch on incompetent clowns) is focused on Iraq and the U.S. public is watching network TV. By the fall of 2008 Afghanistan will be making headlines of the worst kind. This news article in McClatchy is just the beginning.

McSame is at it again

McSame has proposed a national "gas-tax holiday" this morning:

"I propose that the federal government suspend all taxes on gasoline now paid by the American people — from Memorial Day to Labor Day of this year. The effect will be an immediate economic stimulus — taking a few dollars off the price of a tank of gas every time a family, a farmer, or trucker stops to fill up. Over the same period, our government should suspend the purchase of oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which has also contributed to the rising price of oil. This measure,...Continue Reading »
