Didn’t watch the speech but read the transcript. What do I like best? The elevation of the political discourse, as in
“But what I will not do is suggest that the Senator (McCain) takes his positions for political purposes. Because one of the things that we have to change in our politics is the idea that people cannot disagree without challenging each other’s character and patriotism.”
What did I like least? When Obama tells God to bless me and America, while she is at it, as in
“Thank you, God Bless you, and God Bless the United States of America.”
What was missing from the speech? No references to the unconstitutional suspension of Habeas Corpus, no references of America’s foray into the League of Nations whose governments sanction physical torture, no references to hold accountable those who messed things up, even after they leave office.
The reaction to Senator Obama’s speech last night seems to be generally positive. Andrew Sullivan who confesses to his own past political miss-judgements is glowingly supportive in this piece. Josh Marshall is a little more reserved but still very positive in his first reaction. Even the less-than-balanced U.S. News and World Report site is pretty positive in it’s summary/commentary.
