OK, there is some really important stuff going on on this little earth right now…looks like our esteemed General Petraeus is not sure if he really can withdraw as many U.S. troops as he promised…146K U.S. troops are currently in Iraq, plus about the same number of U.S. contractors…making this a very expensive operation to sustain for, ah, 6 years. Petraeus is supposed to submit a official report on his assessment on the possibility of further troop reductions next week, but seems undecided at this point. Tough job.
Then there is a little Hurricane called Gustav bearing down on Cuba (next up: Louisiana). But what is kind of unpredictable is the outcome of the cynical choice of Sarah Palin for VP.
This piece by Robert Elisberg is delicious, laying out how disastrous the choice of Palin might prove to be for McCain. Having slept over this issue for a night, I tend to agree with Mr. Elisberg…but it is impossible to underestimate the level of ignorance of the average American voter, so my judgement, or that of Mr. Elisberg, is less than representative. Let’s hope he’s correct.
I remember watching Mr. Bush debating Mr. Gore in 1999…I was traveling on business and watched the first televised Presidential debate of the 2000 elections in a hotel room in some town in Alabama…I thought that George Bush was out of his league and sure people would see this…little did I know. I may still know little. Time will tell.
